Hmmmm, Yeah, Well...

Yep, I haven't posted here in almost a year. So, guess I better use this thang or might as well delete it and start over. Stories to come:

My experiences at Dragon*Con or "D*C: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".

The fantastic weekend I had at Screamfest/Spooky Empire Con, probably the best time at a convention that I've had in years.

The horrible job sitch, from pretty cool to pure nightmare assness.

Some reviews, books, comics and so on.

So, even if it's just for me, putting my stories down here. Later, McTator...

Take Your Christmas & Shove It!

Hmmmm, welp, that seems kind of cruel. But man, I got to tell you, I am really exhausted by this crap of starting out the Christmas season before October is done and going full-blast Mad Max speed into your face by November 1. And don't get me started on "Green Friday". That's the day at Toys'R'Us that the holiday kicks up from frenzied up into Armageddon Insane. The day after Thanksgiving of course. And so of course, we can barely keep any new hires so I keep ending up in the warehouse. I need a new job so bad and like last month...

Anyway, well, on better subjects I actually got caught up on The Trials of Shazam! and it's a pretty damned good book. I also attended Tampacon on Sunday, found a lot of cool stuff and met Feedback, Fat Momma and Parthenon from "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?!". These folks have to be the nicest people I have met at any type of fandom convention, all the money goes to charities and they keep giving and giving. I took my eldest daughter who was also a big fan of the show and she got autographs and pictures with all three. I also had a major score of the con in finally getting a copy of the last Marvel Comics issue of Star Wars for like $15 bucks. I have seen that thing going for like $75 bucks in the past so I was really happy.

I also finished the first draft of my comic script, The Night Terror and am pretty happy with it. It needs work but at least I've fleshed out the skeleton, the rest is filling up the rest.

I've also been enjoying Chuck, Reaper, Stargate Atlantis (which I am like 2 seasons behind) Pushing Daises, Supernatural, Smallville (though it's huge violations of the Superman canon are really starting to get on my nerves big time again) My Name Is Earl but I have fallen way behind on Prison Break and Heroes.

Welp, gonna get, until I get the spirit, once again, take your premature Christmas and SHOVE IT!!!

Hmmmmmm

Welp, I've been kind of run-down lately. After I got back from Arizona, at TRU we had some big wigs coming so I had to bust my ass cleaning and such. At least it got me out of the warehouse and they got some new hires thank God, so maybe I can do my job instead of someone else's for a change.

Worked on the yard today so we can put up Halloween decorations. The year goes so fast. Seems like yesterday I was stocking overnights at TRU.

Saturday I went out with Trixie and we looked for Halloween stuff and hung out. She's my 'adopted' 3rd daughter. Had a pretty good time. Amazingly enough, I didn't buy anything but lunch but I did do some household grocery shopping later. I fucking hate being an adult and responsible. I've avoided it so much of my life. Oh well...

I've been reading the most amazing book I got out of the library. I figured it would be pretty special with Christopher Golden and Mike Mignolia listed as the writers (and it's got Mignolia's illustrations inside) but its even better then I thought. Baltimore, Or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire is the title. It's an alternate history, kind of mix between Victorian Era 'penny dreadfuls' and pulp fiction. During The Great War, Lord Baltimore attacks a creature feasting on the dead in the trenches (himself wounded and left for dead) in France and unleashes a plague upon the world: vampires! It's really good and I've been reading it in snatches here and there, trying to make it last...

What else? We watched the first Halloween episode of Buffy (no clue how many times I've seen it) to get into the mood. Man, I forget how much I miss my weekly Buffy/Angel Tuesdays. Anyone that dislikes Buffy or the Buffyverse, man, they are not worth knowing...

We also watched an episode of Stargate: Atlantis. I was kind of, meh, the first few episodes, but now I'm really enjoying it. Just like 3 and 3/4 seasons to catch up now! Sheesh...

Welp, that's it for now...

New Name, New Direction

Welp, I've decided to rename this blog and talk about all kinds of things, not just comics. I still love comics, well, not Marvel as much as I did since they murdered Cap, but I just don't read them as much as I did. I find myself just not enjoying the changes in so many titles and feel left behind. Hell, the comics I've enjoyed have been either indys or not superheroes at all. Pretty sad.

So, I'm gonna talk about everything I am into, not just comics.

Like the Richard Sharpe or Sharpe's Rifles series. This series is 21 books long and I am on the last one: Sharpe's Devil. 21 books and not a single bad or slow read in the whole bunch! This has almost never happened to me. Usually you get one a bit off or slow but every single one of them has action, suspense, some romance now and again and Sharpe's like the Age of Empires' James Bond. And there's 16 TV-movies made from the series, which I've seen 3 of so far. The first two were fantastic though the 3rd one was really off, not like the book at all. Anyway, if you want a great read, start either at Sharpe's Tiger (the first book with Sharpe's first adventure in India) or Sharpe's Rifles, the actual 6th book but introduces Sharpe to the 95th Rifles and his first command. I just hope the author, Bernard Cornwell hasn't stopped at Sharpe's Devil and maybe has some more adventures for us...

I also have been collecting classic TV shows lately. I want my kids to see what I grew up with before scum like Ronald Dickhead Moore and Icky Dick Eick totally destroy the rest of classic SF shows like they did with GINO-Fagglestar Gaylactica and the Bion-ick Womyn. At least the horrible BWINO's ratings dropped and hopefully that shit will be canceled soon. I hate that the chick that was so good in the UK show Jekyll became the fake pseudo-Bion-ick Womyn. Poor thing, hopefully she will get a better gig next time.

But anyway, yeah, the shows in the past weren't a huge and dramatic and grim as hell, but you could watch them and not think, geez, what are they shooting this episode in, a wet meat-locker with a green filter on the lens? Yep, maybe the shows in the 60's and so on were light and not deadly serious, but I never had to worry about the original Jamie Summers groping up some strange dude in a bar. Wow, now, let me explain that one to my two daughters, especially my 9 year old. Revisions and remakes mostly suck, suck, suck and then suck again. So, piss off and stop making them you jackasses!

Welp, that's it for now, more rants later...

Blaaaaaahh

Had a falling out with my comic book store. Unreasonable anti-DC-bias. What fun. Drunken, Marvel Zombies and Frat-boy antics up to nearly 30 years old. Stupid idiots that love to cut their own throats.
More later...

Comic Reviews 10/3/06

Welp, I keep forgetting this blog is here. I had like 3 or 4 of the damned thangs and then got rid of 3 of them, just leaving myspace and this one. Well, off to the reviews:

SPOILERS HO!

Trials of Shazam #1 & #2: I was really excited, especially after seeing that Judd Winick was going to be writing the new mini-series. And I did miss the end of the big supernatural/magic battle that went on during Infinite Crisis. Sssssssssssoooooooo, it was a bit upsetting to see that Captain Marvel is being moved over and being made the new "Wizard". I guess I feel that Billy Batson and Marvel are being cheated. They used them so seldom, years went by with the character either not around or just doing tiny guest shots. The Jerry Ordway series was a delight but just apparently had a small cult following or I guess it would have been running up to Infinite Crisis instead of cancelled way before 100 issues. The new mini-series is good and there's some hard-core clever moments. But, the "old school" DC fan in me always resists serious changes. I like change, but there's so many characters being retired, died in the Crisis or missing. It's a lot to ask of someone who's been collecting since the '60s. Anyway, I recommend it, so far, a great series.

Mystery In Space #1: Well, this was a treat. The return of a DC Science Fiction hero and another (The Weird) that was a cool JLA mini-series that was an 'one-off' story arc. The story with Captain Comet brought us up to date on the character and started with a wild jump, the main character's death! And the return of "The Weird" was just a nice bonus. We nerdy, needy comic fans love when you return something either underused or seemingly lost to us, when it's done right. Another book you should pick up.

The Lone Ranger #1: Simply outstanding. A re-telling of how John Reid became The Lone Ranger after the murder of his fellow Texas Rangers that included his father and brother. The story was canon, the art fantastic and the new introduction of Tonto was a nice touch. I bought 2 issues (would have bought more but was low on funds) after reading the first page. This got my best new book of the month so far.

Punisher #37 & 38: Well, thank God, a return to what works in The Punisher, simple bloody action and revenge. It's a sequel to the story where Frank invaded a Russian missle silo to rescue the little girl with the bio-weapon inside her. The general that was in charge finally found out it was Castle and it's pay-back time in "Man of Stone".

Welp, more later, kind of tired, boobye for now!

Welp

My first post here. Had a helluva time getting this thing going. It would crash
at everytime I opened it. Not a clue why. Anyway, this is mostly a site for comics, I have another blog here:

http://www.xanga.com/private/home.aspx?user=ManInBlack44

I gotta warn you though it's adult content and I don't watch my language there.

Welp, I have been mostly trying to get caught up, I went up north for almost 3 weeks and took a batch of Marvel but almost no DC Comics. So, it's reading on Batman, JLA, Flash and such.

Reviews will follow, boobye for now...
